Gravity - not the movie

Im stuck on a technical detail. The new story takes place mostly in space, with spaceships and the like. Where Im stuck on is gravity; does my universe have artificial gravity? Would this be accomplished by creating internal spin and using thrust on the ships? Or some kind of gravity field (including inertia dampers like in star trek).

The first is more realistic, at least for tech as we understand it now. But second gives me a bit more creative freedom (people are free to walk around etc. with ease, crew quarters could be similar to a sailing ship rather than the sleep sacks used on the international space station.

But to y'all think? Does the less realistic version (star trek) ruin the SF for you? Have you heard of any other tech or ideas that might be fun to explore?
